MAINFRAME - TIP OF THE DAY : When you use COUNT operator to set a return code of 12 or 4 if a specified data set is EMPTY, NOTEMPTY, HIGHER(n), LOWER(n), EQUAL(n) or NOTEQUAL(n). where n is a specified number of records. If you use the RC4 operand, SORT sets RC=4; otherwise it sets RC=12. E.g. COUNT FROM(IN) EMPTY

What does "clearing check point and file controls" mean?

I am not familiar with this terminology as relates to a database.

read DB2 for z/OS SPs: Through the CALL and beyond.

yes, that means you are forced to take the time to actually learn something.

this is the mainframe, very little plug and play.

it is more, learn, test, learn, test.

Suggest you talk with your dba or some other developer that has implemented a stored procedure on your system. They should know the specifics for your environment.
